Testimony:

Mike - I grew up in a family where we went to Mass every Sunday, but there was no spiritual vitality in any of us. It was more of a formality or tradition that we even went. I would have claimed to be a Christian because I wasn’t any other religion. The things I lived my life for (popularity, success and approval) growing up were mostly selfish and unfulfilling. It wasn’t until my freshman year in high school that I was ever confronted with the message of God about Jesus Christ. At a church service geared toward high schoolers, I was exposed to my own sinfulness in a way I never had been before. I learned that my sins were petty and that God wouldn’t just sweep them under the rug. Rather, because he is a holy God, sin, which is rebellion against God, would have to be punished. Very quickly, I came to the realization that I could not meet God’s standard of perfection to earn my way into heaven. I realized I was a sinner with no hope unless God intervened into the situation. To my delight, I learned that is exactly why Jesus came to Earth. He lived the life I could never live (one of perfect obedience to God) and he died (on the cross) the death I deserved to die for my sins against him. By putting my faith in him, receiving his grace, and surrounding control of my life to him, I was united to Christ and everything changed. I got assurance that I would spend eternity with God, I was comforted to know all my sins were forgiven, and I was given new purpose in life knowing that I was called to live for him now. The journey since that night has had many sorrows and growing pains, but I would never go back. I have complete joy and fulfillment in life – and it is found in Christ alone.

Corrie - I grew up going to church and was consistently exposed to the things of God. Even though that was my upbringing, I found myself living for the approval of my parents and friends, trying to be a good person, and trying to attain my own dreams and desires. My experience in church gave me lots of head knowledge about God, but there was never any desire to get to know him on a personal level through prayer or reading the Bible.  When I was a sophomore in high school, God opened my heart through many circumstances. I found my friends were failing me, my success was short-lived, and my efforts to be a good person weren’t enough to comfort my soul. During this time, God allowed me to see my need for him and that He would be my only lasting satisfaction.  The years since that time have been filled with learning how to respond to the love Jesus gave me and taking steps to be used for His kingdom and glory!
